Rank Ensemble
published 24 November

Rank Ensemble in Kunsthalle Saturday 3. December 3pm-5pm Nervanderinkatu 3, Helsinki.

Rank Ensemble performs David Toop: FLAT TIME/sounding.

FLAT TIME/sounding is David Toop's answer to the challenge of 'composing for improvisers'. The composition's unique 'score' combines a multi-faceted approach to time with a range of performance directions which are more stimulus than instruction, widely open to a range of performance interpretation, from direct enactment, to metaphor, inspiration, and beyond. The work will be performed in the Nuoret 2011 exhibition space.

Rank is a Helsinki-based ensemble devoted to new music and free improvisation.

ELI KESZLER (USA)

Composer and multi-instrumentalist Eli Keszler utilises drums as both percussion and string instruments. In addition he plays guitar and various self-built instruments. Audience is treated with forceful psychoacoustic phenomena: droning harmonics transforming into energetic rhythms.

JOOKLO QUARTET (ITA/FIN)

Jooklo turns around the Italian couple of David Vanzan (drums) and Virginia Genta (sax). With long daily rehearsals they have created a music that is rooted in free jazz and maintains an irresistible drive. On their Finnish tour in April the duo is joined by local young jazzmen Topias Tiheäsalo (guitar) and Tero Kemppainen (bass).

ONE LICK LESS (FRA)

One Lick Less does anguished, sophisticated and noisy songs: Parisian blues at its best. Julien Bancilhon's selfmade slide guitar and Basile Ferriot's jazzily fluid drumming moans, runs out of breath, groans, howls like a war machine of passion in chains.

PHIL MINTON (UK)

Headliner of the festival is English vocal artist Phil Minton. Performing since 1965, Minton uses and distorts the human voice in fashions unheard-of: transforming traditional jazz scat into barking, squealing, burping and whining.

During his stay in Finland Minton will lead a Feral Choir workshop for amateur vocalists and perform on Tuesday 19.4. at jaZZanti-concert organized by Helsinki Jazz ry.

ORPHAN FAIRYTALE (BEL)

Eva van Deuren creates spookily beautiful music as Orphan Fairytale. Looping like a broken music box, rhythms raising from a tropical mist, human voice melanged with synthetic squeals.
